Angelique and I headed north to ‘The Fields’ in Broadview Heights (Cleveland) on Sunday for a little cyclocross action. The locals said the had 10” of snow Thursday, and Saturday/Sunday it warmed up to about 50 degrees. You know what that means! SLOP. There was a technical singletrack section that was more like a creek then a trail and the grass sections were so soft you would sink in some spots 4 or 5 inches. Tough racing conditions. I raced in the B’s and got 13th, not bad. Here’s a few photos.

deedee ramone callie allie sutrisno johnson. my mom hasn’t seen this girl yet. deedee’s an odd sort. she likes to kiss people! on the lips! it’s quite alarming. she also likes to lay on one’s chest while they are watching tv. her fluffiness almost obscures the television. here she is demonstrating the technique with andy:

so my mom sent us a package of goodies. it was a very nice surprise. it was filled to the brim with stuff that i like. pajama pants, dish towels, ya know… good things. she included a toy for carlos and deedee, and it’s a big hit. feathers are always winners.

to be a cat!

So I seriously think cyclocross is the greatest thing since my mom introduced me to peanut butter/lettuce and mayo sandwiches, so yummy and so good! but I always wonder why. I’ll try my hand at a list:

  • You feel a euphoria that comes after pushing yourself 110% for 50 minutes
  • There’s a beauty in pushing so hard that all you can focus on is the moment you are in, everything else is out of mind.
  • No matter if you finish DFL or 1st place, you’re always battling to pass someone, or not get caught. It’s always a race.
  • It brings all cyclist together. anyone that loves the beautiful addiction to suffering will love cross racing.
  • It’s in the fall, duh!
  • Goes great with Belgian beer.
  • It’s so ridiculous its perfect. You ride a skinny bike in the grass/mud and then jump off it to run up/over stupid barriers. for what? who knows!
  • It’s not on some dirt trail 2 hours from anywhere in the middle of nowhere, or some crappy industrial parking lot crit, it’s in parks. Kids playing, soccer fields, swings, schools. Next to the city, in the town center, accessible and usually beautiful.
  • And lastly, its grassroots. Still punk rock in an industry swallowed up by $4000 frames and $500 jackets. There’s people selling cookies to raise money. You win a messenger bag for 3rd place. Friends cheering on friends. You do it for the love, nothing else.
  • Ya get it? maybe these great looking pictures from the San Fransisco Grand Prix will help.

    then: little
    now: big
guess it’s hard to see there, since andy’s buggin’ him and it’s tough to see carlos’ full girth.

i was looking through some “old” photos… i don’t know if it’s clear here, but carlos has grown into a massive dude. here is carlos in october of 2004, just a few days after andy picked him up from the cornfield:

and he here is nowadays, november of 05:handsomew

we’re still collecting valuable deedee shots. but for now, here’s one of her gettin’ down with some fresh catnip:

i was checking my favorite blog, design*sponge, and she had a link to a funny online quiz, called “mod or fraud?” it has 16 photos and it asks you to choose if it’s actually old, or if it’s new and just “retro.” thankfully, i got a pretty good score. i got 2 or 3 wrong; and they were stupid mistakes. i should have spent a little more time, but alas… also try the “swiss, swedish, danish or dutch?” quiz. it’s absolutely hilarious and hard. didn’t so hot on that one!
